Loukatos Ouzo is a traditional Greek anise-flavored spirit produced by the Loukatos Distillery in Patras, which has been distilling since 1962.
It is characterized by its bold anise aroma and a distinct, smooth finish with subtle notes of mastic.
Description & Taste Profile
- Aroma: Dominant, lingering scent of aniseed balanced by herbal and floral undertones.
- Flavor: A clean, slightly sweet palate with a touch of mastic that adds a "deft salinity" and herbal complexity.
- Alcohol Content: Typically contains 38% to 40% ABV.
- Appearance: Crystal clear in the bottle, it turns into a cloudy, milky-white liquid (the "ouzo effect") when water or ice is added due to the precipitation of anise oils.
How to Use Loukatos Ouzo
Ouzo is more than just a drink; in Greece, it is a cultural ritual centered around slow sipping and social interaction
-
Serving Style:
- The Diluted Method (Traditional): Pour the ouzo into a tall, narrow glass first. Add cold water to your preferred strength (often 1 part ouzo to 1.5–2 parts water), then add 1–2 ice cubes last to prevent the oils from crystallizing too quickly.
- Neat: It can be enjoyed straight in a small shot glass, typically at room temperature or slightly chilled.
-
Food Pairings (Mezedes): Ouzo is rarely consumed without food. Its strong flavor pairs best with salty, acidic, or savory small plates:
- Seafood: Grilled octopus, fried calamari, salted sardines, or anchovies.
- Dips & Veggies: Tzatziki, olives, feta cheese, and sliced cucumbers or tomatoes with salt.
- In Cocktails: For a modern twist, use it as a botanical base in drinks like an Ouzo Sour (with lemon and sugar) or mix it with fruit juices like lemonade or orange juice
