Spiced Hot Chocolate
Ingredients:
- 2 cups whole milk (or non-dairy alternative such as almond or oat milk)
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp ground chili powder (optional, for a spicy kick)
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- Optional toppings: whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate shavings, or a sprinkle of cinnamon
Instructions:
1. Combine Dry Ingredients:
- In a small bowl, mix 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon, 1/8 tsp ground chili powder (if using), and 1/4 tsp sea salt.
2. Heat the Milk:
- In a medium saucepan, heat 2 cups of milk over medium heat until warm but not boiling. Stir occasionally to prevent scalding.
3. Add the Dry Ingredients:
- Gradually whisk the dry cocoa mixture into the warm milk, ensuring there are no lumps.
4. Simmer and Stir:
- Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer while whisking continuously for 2-3 minutes. This allows the cocoa and spices to fully dissolve and blend.
5. Add Vanilla:
- Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract.
6. Serve:
- Pour the spiced hot chocolate into mugs.
7. Garnish:
- Top with whipped cream, marshmallows, or chocolate shavings. For an extra touch, sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon or chili powder on top.
