Mulled Wine
Ingredients:
- 750ml (1 bottle) red wine (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Zinfandel work well)
- 1 orange, sliced into rounds
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 4 whole cloves
- 2 star anise
- 3 tbsp honey or granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
- 1/4 cup brandy (optional, for added warmth)
- Optional garnish: orange slices, cinnamon sticks, or star anise
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Ingredients:
- Wash and slice 1 orange into thin rounds. Set aside a few slices for garnish, if desired.
2. Combine Ingredients in a Pot:
- In a large saucepan, pour 750ml (1 bottle) of red wine.
- Add the orange slices, 2 cinnamon sticks, 4 whole cloves, and 2 star anise.
- Stir in 3 tbsp of honey or sugar and 1/4 cup brandy (if using).
3. Heat the Mixture:
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the wine just to a simmer. Do not let it boil, as boiling will evaporate the alcohol and alter the flavor.
4. Simmer and Infuse:
- Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for 15-20 minutes. This allows the spices to infuse the wine with their flavors. Stir occasionally.
5. Taste and Adjust Sweetness:
- Taste the mulled wine and add more honey or sugar if needed. Stir to dissolve.
6. Strain and Serve:
- Using a fine-mesh strainer, remove the spices and orange slices as you pour the mulled wine into mugs or heatproof glasses.
7. Garnish and Enjoy:
- Garnish with a fresh orange slice, a cinnamon stick, or a star anise for an elegant presentation. Serve warm.
Serving Tip:
Mulled wine is best served on a cozy evening or at festive gatherings. Pair it with spiced cookies or biscotti for a delightful treat.
